How Hard Is It To Be Happy!

November 29, 2018 by Manisha Panwar

I sometimes wonder what are the things that make me happy….A friend of mine told me to “grow up”. I have been hearing this since I was 7 and today I am close to 42!! So got me brewing some thoughts on why is “happiness” and being a tad crazy associated only with children and the younger generation.
Is Happiness so hard to find? We all have our low days and some really high ones (literally!!) I am not a self professed optimist. I can be really cynical at times bordering a level of negativity that makes my loved ones want me seeking self help! Recently I saw a  cartoon which said “Happiness Lies In Me”
The past few months have been a little difficult for me (no I am not using this to vent out!) and as usual a few of my friends gave me what I needed the most – one kick on the backside! I read more, I watched some good stuff on the telly and I realized that it is definitely not difficult to “look” for happiness. I could create it around me and that too without anyone’s help or approval!

I decided to derive happiness from everything that is around me and me being me I just had to list  them – the few things that make me smile, make me happy and like the song says..”my dil goes mmmmmmmm!!!!” I wonder if someone else finds this familiar!I find myself smiling when:

I book flights / train tickets to a new place!!

Smell a new book!

See a new flower bloom in my so called garden,  the morning I open my balcony door.

My favourite pooches coming to lick my face! (I don’t have one of my own!!)

To see an old friend come online and we chat extensively on Watsapp when I should really be working!

To know some close friend’s pet name I never knew existed and tease them till I get bored of it!

Somesh calling unexpectedly (My husband never ever calls during work hours!)

Watch my growing up daughter checking herself out in the mirror – over and over again!

See my daughter get aggressive when she feels for something strongly

See a dude gymming his guts out (Secret – just seeing a Dude is enough!!!)

Make a verbal blunder(oh I am so good at it! I suffer from the foot in the mouth disease!).

People say “gosh! you have lost weight!”(its been a while since someone said that though!)

Smile from a passerby!

A smiling and chatty Cabbie

Smell of wet soil

Aroma of  home cooked meal

Hot brewing coffee in the winters of Darjeeling or cold coffee in the humidity of Mumbai

Boiled bhutta with butter(smack smack!!)

Having a chat with kids!

An infant gurgling !

Lunch at Churchill

A parcel I did not expect

A call from an old forgotten friend

A tight hug from Somesh in public (rare! rare! rare!)

My daughter saying “I love you”(as a kid she did it to get her way, as a teen she really means it!!)

Seeing my mum on facebook.

Reading the comments of my friends on my blog!

A book full of Pj’s (love the sindhi and santa banta ones)

…..and the list is endless……….
My vow to myself is just this – times can be trying, they can be distressing but being happy is easy! It is how we condition our mind, what we feed it! I choose to feed it with the bright side of everything ! I will seek to be happy.. I am the new “Happy Singh!!!”
